Coil, under the name Time Machines, released an album of four tracks; each of a single tone sustained for an extended period, with each track assigned a chemical composition to be used in conjunction with the music. The intention was that the drug and sound would together create a catalyst for departure and travel. Shortly thereafter Stars of the Lid did them one better, by creating the album Avec Laudenum, (newly reissued in the US on Kranky), which provided the journey without having to create or procure illicit chemistry (although the title suggests that auto-pharmacology still may play a part).
Stars of the Lid create music that is strangely pure. It's comprised of warm, languid melodies that descend like a sweet, dark haze, and, at high volumes, seemingly infinite depth (at low volume it evaporates into white noise). The sound expands to fill every available space but is never oppressive. It can be heavy, but pleasant, like a comforter. Like amniotic fluid. Used appropriately, it is completely consuming. Consider this your prescription.
